đź’ˇ Weekly Thought Exercise: Getting Data to Tell You the Real Story

"What percent certainty is your average monthly decision?"

This week's thought exercise is inspired by this My First Million episode and another founder (hey Alex!).

It’s a damn good question.

And (to toot my own horn here) the exact reason why I created ThinkWithAI.

There are two problems that come up when you try to answer this question.

Scenario A: “I’m 100% certain in my average monthly decision.”

This looks great from the outside. But where is that certainty coming from?

If you’re not questioning why you feel so certain you’re living in Bias City.

Bias City is the part of your mind that tells you it’s confident and all knowing.

But it’s really just pulling information from past experiences and pretending that answer perfectly fits this brand new situation.

And, sometimes those answers are right.

But other times they lead you completely astray.

Scenario B: “I’m not that certain in my average monthly decision.”

You feel like you’re building the airplane as it’s flying.

Kind of exhilarating.

Also wildly frightening.

It feels like at any moment you’ll take a hammer to the wrong spot and your beloved company will fall to the ground.

You don’t feel confident because your brain is telling you it doesn’t have past information to properly make this decision.

It doesn’t know what the soution is. It can only guess.

Which feels terrifying.

But is actually the exact place that we’re all making our decisions from.

Because whether you’re more aligned with Scenario A or Scenario B: you’re making decisions based on…what?

“People already have a story in their head about what they think happens or what they need to do and then they simply just search for the data that’s going to confirm that story.”

Shaan Puri, MFM Episode 628

Today we’re going to let the data do the talking so you’re not feeding your biases or guessing and hoping it all works out for the best.

And we’re going to make AI do the hardwork of figuring out the story the data is telling you:

  • Copy and paste the prompt into your AI of choice (as always I prefer Claude)

  • Add the data source you want it to analyze

  • Data source ideas: onboarding surveys, offboarding surveys, customer purchase data, website analytics, social media insights, email marketing data, support tickets, sales funnel data, A/B testing results, ad campaign data, competitor data, referral data, behavioral data (like heat maps), customer reviews, daily standup transcriptions, performance reviews, etc.

Here's the prompt to copy and paste into Claude.ai:
